WORLD OCEANS DAY 2021 – THE OCEAN: LIFE AND LIVELIHOODS

Today June 8th, we join the United Nations to celebrate World Oceans Day.

“The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods” is the theme for 2021 and reminds us all of the major role the oceans have in everyday life.

Did you know that…

The ocean covers over 70% of the Earth and produces at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen

Oceans absorb about 30% of carbon dioxide produced by humans, buffering the impacts of global warming.

The ocean is home to most of earth’s biodiversity, and is the main source of protein for more than a billion people around the world.

And yet, despite all its benefits, the ocean is now in need of vital support.

100 million marine animals die each year from plastic waste alone.

The largest trash site on the planet is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, twice the surface area of Texas, it outnumbers sea life there 6 to 1.

70% of our debris sinks into the ocean’s ecosystem, 15% floats, and 15% lands on our beaches.

80% of global marine pollution comes from agriculture runoff, untreated sewage, discharge of nutrients and pesticides.

90% of the worldwide ocean debris comes from 10 rivers alone.

We are taking more from the ocean than can be replenished.

It’s time to take action.

This year is the beginning of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021 to 2030.

The decade will strengthen international cooperation to develop the scientific research and innovative technologies that can connect ocean science with the needs of society.

For Almar Water Solutions, parto f Abdul Latif Jameel Energy & Environmental Services, the ocean is our main raw material. We transform saltwater from the oceans into freshwater for millions of people. And we return it to its place of origin after exhaustive treatment, thus preserving its nature.

“The oceans have always been there. With them we enjoy and refresh ourselves and, from them, we feed ourselves. Water, whatever its origin, is critical for our life, so we must conserve and protect it, and therefore our oceans. Today is a day for humanity to celebrate the ocean.” – Carlos Cosín, CEO of Almar Water Solutions.

A living, healthy and clean ocean is essential for life.

Let’s work together to protect our shared ocean!
