Executive Overview
The Zuluf Water Treatment Plant is a key industrial water infrastructure project supporting the development of the Zuluf oil field in eastern Saudi Arabia.
Located approximately 6 kilometres west of Tanajib Airport, the facility treats and conditions water to produce high-quality injection water used in oil wells to maintain reservoir pressure and support the production of Arab Heavy crude oil.
The plant has a production capacity of 185,000 m³ per day and removes gases, iron and suspended solids to ensure the water meets the strict quality requirements for reinjection into the reservoir. The project is operated under a 25-year BOOT scheme through a joint venture between Almar Water Solutions and Aljomaih Energy & Water Company, with engineering and construction performed by Fisia Italimpianti and Aquatech International.
Contractual & Financial Structure
The Zuluf Water Treatment Plant is delivered under a BOOT (Build–Own–Operate–Transfer) contract, which includes the long-term operation and maintenance (O&M) of the facility over a 25-year concession period.
The project company is formed by a joint venture between Almar Water Solutions and Aljomaih Energy & Water Company, with Almar holding a 51% majority participation.
Following completion of the plant, the operation and maintenance of the facility is performed jointly by Almar Water Solutions, Aljomaih Energy & Water Company, Fisia Italimpianti and Aquatech International, ensuring the long-term performance and reliability of the plant throughout the concession period.
Technical Solution
The Zuluf Water Treatment Plant is designed to treat and condition water for reinjection into oil wells, a process used to maintain reservoir pressure and optimize hydrocarbon recovery.
The treatment system removes gases, iron and suspended solids through several integrated treatment stages.
The plant includes:
- Degassing system to remove dissolved gases from the water
- Off-gas treatment and compression system
- Water treatment system with clariflocculation
- Dual media filtration to remove suspended solids
- Cartridge filtration for final polishing
- Sludge treatment line with centrifuge dewatering units
This treatment configuration ensures that the injection water meets the quality requirements needed to protect wells, pipelines and reservoir integrity.
